Daler Mehndi Case: Three Controversies The Singer Has Been In Previously

Written By Krishna Makwana | Mumbai | Published:

Hack:

  • Daler Mehndi has been convicted in the 15-year-old human-trafficking case.
  • However, this is not the first time that the singer has ended in a pool of legal trouble.

Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi has been convicted in the 15-year-old 'Kabootarbazi’ (human trafficking) case by Patiala Court. Daler and his brother, Shamsher Singh, had been accused of illegally sending people abroad disguised as members of his troupe by charging hefty "passage money."

But, this is not the first time that Daler Mehndi has ended up in a pool of legal trouble.

Here are the three controversies that Daler Mehndi has been in:

Controversy 1:

Back in 1999, reports were doing the rounds that Daler Mehndi was on the hit-list of Dubai-based fugitive Dawood Ibrahim. Even though he allegedly denied any such threat, very few were actually willing to believe him. The singer reportedly did not cry foul till his concert — scheduled to be held in Orissa — was cancelled at the eleventh hour by the organisers, after a newspaper reported that the concert may cause security risk for the audience. The singer reportedly vowed to never perform in Orissa again.

Controversy 2:

Before Daler Mehndi could launch his album, ‘Nabi Buba Nabi’ in 2001, it got mired in controversy. Reportedly, several muslim activists groups staged a dharna at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, demanding a ban on the album as it had made fun of their religion. In response, the singer denied allegation, saying that the song is in “praise of God.” The album caused tension within the Muslim community as the word, ‘Nabi’ meant, ‘Allah.’ The activists reportedly felt that the song, in particular, was picturised in an obscene manner and there were certain objectionable scenes in the video.

Controversy 3:

This took place back in 2007 when Shaad Ali-directorial film, ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom,’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Lara Dutta, Bobby Deol and Pretty Zinta had released. The title track of the movie faced some heat from Daler Mehndi, who was the original singer. His voice had reportedly been replaced by Shankar Mahadevan without any notice. He proceeded to file a case against Yash Raj Films, asking for a formal apology while also allegedly demanding for a hefty sum of Rs 1 crore. However, Yash Raj — the film’s producer — was quick to fire back. While admitting that Mehndi was the original singer, Yash Raj Films revealed that the terms and conditions didn’t work out and thus, they had to remove his voice. Even though Daler Mehndi and Yash Raj Studios patched up later, the latter reportedly continues to ban the singer from the studios’ premises.
