Late veteran actor Dev Anand was undoubtedly one of the most loved actors in Bollywood. Born in 1923 as DharamDev  Pishorimal Anand, he was the third child of his parents. He came to Mumbai after graduating from Lahore. He decided that he wanted to be a performer after he watched  Ashok Kumar's performance in films such as 'Achhut Kanya' and 'Kismet'. 

Babu Rao Pai of Prabhat Film Studios was the one who gave him his first break in the film 'Hum Ek Hai', which was released in the year 1946. The film was based on Hindu-Muslim unity and also featured Kamala Kotnis. 

In 1949, the actor opened his own film production house named 'Navketan Films'. In 1958, Dev Anand produced and starred in 'Kala Paani', which won him the Filmfare award for best actor. Directed by Raj Khosla, the movie is a remake of the 1955 Bengali film 'Sabar Upaarey' which itself was based on A.J. Cronin's 1953 novel 'Beyond This Place'. Apart from Dev Anand, the film stars Dev Anand, Madhubala, Nalini Jaywant, Bir Sakuja and Agha. The film's music is by Sachin Dev Burman, and the lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

In 1965, Dev Anand was cast opposite Waheeda Rehman, in the romantic film 'Guide'. The movie was an instant hit and was based on the novel by R.K Narayan of the same name. The movie proved memorable for its award-winning performances by the lead actors and memorable music by S. D. Burman. In 2007, the film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. 

In 1971, Dev Anand turned director, producer, writer and actor for the film 'Hare Ram Hare Krishna'. Apart from him, the film also featured Zeenat Aman and Mumtaz. The movie dealt with the decadence of the Hippie culture. It aimed to have an anti-drug message and also depicts some problems associated with Westernization such as divorce.The movie was a hit and was also responsible for making Zeenat Aman a star. 

Dev Anand's last film 'Chargesheet' released in 2011, ahead of his demise on December 3, 2011. The film was directed and produced by the actor himself. The film is named after a formal document of accusation prepared by a law-enforcement agency in India.
