‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ actor-director Kangana Ranaut accused the film industry of running an agenda against the movie, based on 1857 war hero Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, almost like ‘mafia’ or ‘colonialism.’

In an exclusive interview on Court Martial on Republic Bharat with Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, the actress said she felt the film industry felt ‘threatened’ as she’s often raised issues like nepotism and compared them to a ‘mafia’ or like ‘colonialism’ to attack and mock outsiders. The ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ star said many from the industry talk about women empowerment, but are quiet when a film about a female freedom fighter made by a woman just hit the theatres.

When asked if she felt there is a conspiracy against her, Kangana said, “Not a conspiracy, it is an agenda, maybe they feel threatened because I talk about nepotism. The manner in which the industry operates is like mafia against outsiders. Like colonialism, if you don’t know English, they will make fun of you, if you are from outside, they will mock you. People who talk about women empowerment, first time there’s an epic film about India’s biggest freedom fighter, which is directed by a woman, why is it that no one is talking about it? At this time, in this year, there is no film as big or better reviewed than this.”

When asked to name one person who she feels is behind this, the actress responded, "I haven’t come here to achieve any kind of justice, this is not a court. It is unfair to take a single person’s name particularly in a platform like that...  I don’t want to sort of come up with a conclusion."

She added, "Whenever a film like ‘Dangal’ or ‘Raazi’ comes, I go out and praise it. My film is being targetted."

'Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi' is based on the life and struggles of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and her war against the British East India Company, during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The film that released on January 25 has earned over Rs 64 crore.
