The film follows the journey of Fanney Khan played by Anil Kapoor, who is in a quest to fulfil his daughter Lata's dreams. While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays the role of a famous artist named Baby Singh with Rajkummar Rao playing her love interest. 'Fanney Khan' also throws light on the issue of body shaming. Talking about his connection with the film's subject, producer Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, who has a 19-year-old daughter, said that he can see the self-image issues growing girls face. He further went on to add that girls are constantly judged for everything from their hair to their makeup and films are also to blame for this unfortunate reality.

'Fanney Khan', which is the official remake of 'Everybody's Famous', marks Atul Manjrekar's directorial debut. As per reports, the filmmaker recently revealed that it wasn't Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao but Priyanka Chopra and R Madhavan who were the first choices for the film. Manjrekar revealed that Priyanka and Madhavan couldn't be a part of the film due to date issues. Manjrekar has earlier directed a number of ad films and has also worked as an assistant director and as an editor for over 20 years.
