Debutant Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Tejasvi Surya put up a fine show by beating Congress’ BK Hariprasad to win the Bengaluru South Lok Sabha seat. Before he takes charge of his responsibilities as the Member of Parliament, Surya's views endorsing same-sex marriage, as expressed in a tweet last year, is now being praised by celebrities of the film industry. Onir and Apurva Asrani, who’ve been open about being gay, appreciated Surya’s tweet after news of his victory in the Lok Sabha elections surfaced.
When Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that criminalises homosexuality was scrapped by the Supreme Court in September last year, Surya had tweeted, “Some are expressing 'concern' that #Section377Scrapped would be followed by demands for legalizing same sex marriage. Why not? Aren't ideas of marriage, inheritance & adoption mere legal fictions? Why can't these fictions have space for same sex couples? Natural consequence!”
Asrani, writer of acclaimed films like ‘Aligarh’ and editor of National Award-winning ‘Shahid’, replied to the eight-month long post on Saturday, “Progressive thoughts from a progressive MP from Bangalore. Yes, Tejasvi Surya bats for equal rights for the LGBTQ and he happens to be to be from the BJP. Fingers crossed for a brighter tmrw.” (sic)
Onir, National Award-winning director for ‘I Am’, also replied, “Well said ..,”
Harish Iyer, a popular LGBTQ activist, also tweeted, “You have won the mandate. It's so wonderful, @Tejasvi_Surya , now I'm sure you will fight for Equal marriage Rights. this should be a bipartisan issue. I look forward to working with you in achieving that. 😊"
