Veteran actor Raj Kapoor built the iconic R.K Studios in 1948 and began to produce films under the banner of R.K Films. His children Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain have mutually decided to sell the studios.  On September 16, 2017, a major part of the two-acre studio got destroyed in a fire.  As per reports, actor Rishi Kapoor revealed that the family had considered renovating the studio with state-of-the-art technology, but did not deem it to be practical.

The first film, 'Aag' that was shot in the studio was a flop, but only to gain success with 'Barsaat' in the following year. From thereon the studio witnessed the filming of various successful films. Here's looking at five iconic films that were shot at the R.K Studios located in Mumbai:

1) Barsaat (1949)

‘Barsaat’ was the second film shot by R.K films in the iconic studio. The love story has Raj Kapoor and Nargis as the lead pair along with Pran and Nimmi. The film was a huge success and also became the first successful film shot at R.K Studio. Due to its success, the poster pose of the film, where Nargis is seen dangling in the arms of Raj Kapoor went on to become the logo of the studio and production.

2) Shree 420  (1955)

Raj Kapoor, directed, produced and even acted in this film. His 'Barsaat' co-star Nargis was the female lead of the film. The film was written by  Khwaja Ahmad Abbas and revolved around Raj Kapoor’s character who was a con artist but mends his way when he gets cheated.

3) Mera Naam Joker (1970)

This is an iconic film that failed to impress the audience at the time of its release. However, years later people started to recognise the film as a classic and film experts labelled it as a ‘misunderstood piece.’ The film directed by Raj Kapoor had him in the lead role and was Rishi Kapoor’s debut film. The film was under production for six years and its failure led to heavy losses to R.K Films.

4) Bobby (1973)

This film once again brought together the director-writer pair of Raj Kapoor and Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. The film had Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Prem Nath and Pran in the lead. The film was a box-office hit and there were rumours back then that the film was made to launch Rishi Kapoor as an actor. However, later Rishi Kapoor had clarified that the film was made to recover the losses suffered due to the film ‘Mera Naam Joker’.

5) Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985)

Produced-directed and written by Raj Kapoor, this 1985 Bollywood film was Raj Kapoor’s last film. His son Rajiv Kapoor played the lead in the film along with Mandakini. The film had landed in controversy for Mandakini’s bold scenes of breastfeeding and bathing under a waterfall in a transparent attire.
