Yash Raj Chopra was an Indian film director and producer who worked in Hindi cinema. He made his directorial debut with 'Dhool Ka Phool' in 1959, a melodrama about illegitimacy, and followed it with the social drama 'Dharmputra'. Even though his first two films were a success, he gained recognition only with his third film, 'Waqt' in the year 1965. From there on there was no turning back for the filmmaker and he went on to directed and produced several hit films. He has a major contribution towards the Hindi film industry. 

While there are several movies, the late filmmaker has made, here we list out five of the iconic films of Yash Chopra on his birth anniversary. 

Waqt  (1965)

The film directed by Yash Chopra was released in 1965. It was among the first multi starrer film and set the trend for other films. The film featured  Balraj Sahni, Sunil Dutt, Sadhana, Raaj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore and Achala Sachdev among others. The film is about a family who gets separated during an earthquake only to reunite in the end of the film. The film was later remade into the Telugu as Bhale Abbayilu (1969) and in Malayalam as Kolilakkam (1981).


Deewar ( 1975)

This is a crime drama film written by Salim-Javed.  Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Nirupa Roy, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh. The film focuses on the socio-political scenario of the 1970s. The film is about two brothers played by Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor who get on the opposite sides of the law owing to their circumstances.  Deewaar received the Filmfare Best Movie Award of 1975, in addition to six other Filmfare Awards.

 Silsila (1981)

This was a hit romantic drama film featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha and Sanjeev Kumar in the lead roles. It was alleged that the story was loosely based on the real-life love triangle of its three stars, Amitabh-Jaya-Rekha, the most talked about love affair at the time. The film did not gain commercial success, but later on, went to become a cult classic and is also considered as Yash Chopra's best work ever. The movie's soundtrack became a "super-hit" upon the release of the film and continues to be popular.

Chandni (1989) 

Starring Sridevi in the titular role, the film is a romantic musical drama.  Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Waheeda Rehman play the supporting roles in the film. After a series of commercially unsuccessful action movies, Yash Chopra made a musical romantic and collaborated with Sridevi for the first time. Needless to say, the film was a commercial hit and received critical acclaim.  At the 37th National Film Awards, the film received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The film is about Chandni whose fiance gets paralysed in an accident forcing her to start afresh. Her boss falls in love with her and she agrees to marry him. She faces a dilemma when her fiancé returns to her life.

Veer-Zaara (2004)

Veer-Zaara is a romantic story that spread across the border. Veer (Shah Rukh Khan) is an Indian Air Force pilot while Zaara (Preity Zinta) is a Pakistani woman hailing from a rich political family of Lahore. When Veer learns Zaara loves him, he quits his job to go to Pakistan, where he is imprisoned on false charges. Years later, a young Pakistani lawyer played by Rani Mukerji finds Veer in prison and upon listening to his story, tries to free him.
