'I think there is freedom of speech in our country, but I am ignorant of the controversy' says Emraan Hashmi as Naseeruddin Shah turns ambassador for Amnesty International

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has sparked controversy again, this time for endorsing Amnesty International India's film that speaks volumes of a 'massive crackdown on freedom of expression and human rights defenders.' 

On this comment, Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, who is currently promoting his film 'Cheat India' was asked to lend his thoughts on the same to which he responded saying 'I am able to express what I am thinking right now. I think there is freedom of speech in our country, I am a bit ignorant of the controversy. So, it will be a bit irresponsible of me to speak on that'

The controversy started when Amnesty India shared a video on Twitter that said, 'In 2018, India witnessed a massive crackdown on freedom of expression and human rights defenders. Let's stand up for our constitutional values this new year and tell the Indian government that its crackdown must end now. #AbkiBaarManavAdhikaar'

In the video, the veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah also alleged that "the country is awash with horrific hatred and cruelty."

Earlier this week, the Bollywood actor had found himself at the centre of a major controversy over his remarks about the killing of a policeman in Bulandshahr. The controversy started after a video emerged on social media in which Shah can be heard saying "the death of a cow has more significance than that of a police officer."
