‘I Was Unfair, I Thought Selfishly’: Shweta Bachchan Nanda On Apprehensions About Daughter Navya Entering Bollywood

  • Shweta stated that she used to get ‘sleepless nights’ seeing the hate her brother Abhishek received on social media and didn’t want her daughter to go through the same for ‘selfish reasons’
  • She believed Navya’s association with a famous family was not a reason enough to believe she is apt for the industry and that she ‘has business being here’ only if she is ‘driven, passionate and talented’

Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Ananya Panday, Suhana Khan, Navya Naveli Nanda, among others have for long been tipped for a Bollywood debut. While Janhvi and Sara made their debuts last year, Ananya Panday will do so this year and Shah Rukh Khan has often spoken about his daughter’s aspirations, Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter will, in all probability, not be an actress.

When host Karan Johar asked if she had ‘drilled’ into the star kid’s head that the industry is a 'dark, strange and unstable place' because of which she never considered the prospect, Shweta replied, “I think I was excessive, I was unfair, I thought selfishly... One of the bonuses of coming from a family that's in the movies. I'm seeing the second generation of actors in my family. I know the heartbreak. I see their faces when things don't work out and I don't want yet another member of the family to be in the business”

Shweta stated that she used to get ‘sleepless nights’ seeing the hate her brother received on social media and didn’t want her daughter to go through the same for ‘selfish reasons’. She admitted that she’s unaware of the talent or industry the youngster would make her career in. Shweta believed Navya’s association with a famous family was not a reason enough to believe she is apt for the industry and that she ‘has business being here’ only if she is ‘driven, passionate and talented.’

She said, “I’m on Instagram and I follow my brother and know the hate he gets. Whether you like him as an actor or not, it will bother to me as a sister. I hated it... it gave me sleepless nights and I don’t want yet another member of my family to be in this business for selfish reasons.

"I don't know what Navya's talent is. I feel, unless she's completely driven, passionate and talented, she has no business being here. Just because she's related to some famous people doesn't mean she has what it takes."
