Kajol On Female-Led Films: 'It Has Become Financially Viable To Think Of Projects That Don't Have Big Superstars'

Bollywood actress Kajol, who was last seen in the Bollywood film 'Helicopter Eela', feels that the strong performance of female-fronted films at the ticket window has forced producers to rethink their strategy.

Of late, several films are becoming female-oriented rather than objectifying women to increase the glamour quotient of films. The 'Ishq' actress says that earlier producers were reluctant to back such projects because the box office response for such films were not very encouraging even if they garnered positive reviews.

But of late, films like 'Raazi', 'Padmaavat' and 'Pink', who had their plot surrounding largely female protagonists, minted good numbers at the box-office. Kajol, therefore, believes that there is a definitive change in mindset.

While talking to PTI as to why female-fronted films are doing well now, the actress said the films have now become financially viable and the numbers are coming in. “I think that’s the main difference. Such films were always being made but they were not doing well as other films were or maybe the ratio was much less. The ratio and the numbers are adding up now,” she added.

The 'Baazigar' actress credits the audiences for bringing about this change. She said that it is the audience whose mindset has changed, and they have decided to watch every kind of film. “Finally, it has become financially viable to even think of projects that don’t have big superstars in them," she says.

The actor agrees to the fact that women are no longer shown as an accessory in commercial films and says industry stalwarts have always opted for such strong characters, irrespective of the gender.

“If you look at the best directors, I’m not talking about movies but directors, all of them have had very strong characters, very strong female characters in their films. I think every character of theirs has been well-rounded and so I think that’s the most important point that we need to take home with us," she said.
