It's 2019 and looks like afterall it is the story that works for the audience and not the grandeur. After becoming the highest opener of this year, Karan Johar's grand theatrical release on Wednesday 'Kalank' recorded the steepest decline on Day 2 with the movie earning Rs 11.45 crore.

Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh who called the film 'disappointing' tweeted that 'a decline was on the cards but didn't expect it to be this much'. He wrote: "#Kalank has a fall on Day 2... A decline was on the cards, but the drop is much higher than expected... Will be interesting to see how it fares on Day 3 [#GoodFriday]... Wed 21.60 cr, Thu 11.45 cr. Total: ₹ 33.05 cr. India biz."

He further added: "Day 2 decline... 2019 releases...
☆ #Kesari [Thu release]
Decline on Day 2: 20.47%
☆ #GullyBoy [Thu release]
Decline on Day 2: 32.47%
☆ #Kalank [Wed release]
Decline on Day 2: 46.99%
Note: Day 2 was working day in all three cases."

The period drama starring Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit Nene, received mixed reviews on social media. While some criticised the 'unrealistic' situations in the movie, the others called it a 'snooze fest with heavy on songs film.'

‘Kalank’ has been helmed by ‘2 States’ director Abhishek Varman and revolves around a love story with conflicts in the pre-Independence era. Apart from Karan’s Dharma Productions, Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Star Studios have backed the movie.
