Karan Oberoi, arrested in rape and extortion case, sent to 14-day judicial custody; lawyer gives an update on the future course of action

Karan Oberoi, who was arrested in a rape and extortion case, has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody, by a magistrate court on Thursday. His lawyer Dinesh Tiwari stated that the police's demand for police custody was rejected and his arguments about the 'fake case' and he was then sent to a judicial custody.   He also revealed that they will be applying for bail on Thursday   

"Today, the police came up (in the court) asking for police custody. We objected to it and pointed out how a fake case has been created out of nowhere. Just because two people don’t get along, this kind of allegations are created with the help of the police. After hearing the arguments at length, the court has sent him to judicial custody, request for police custody has been rejected," Oberoi's lawyer Dinesh Tiwari said outside the court.

He will also revealed that they will be applying for bail tomorrow itself.

Oberoi was arrested on Monday after an FIR was registered against him at the Oshiwara police station in Mumbai under Section 376 and 384 (rape and extortion) of the Indian Penal Code. A woman, an astrologer by profession, alleged that Oberoi not just raped her on the pretext of marriage, but also complained that he filmed the act, blackmailed and threatened her by demanding money to not share the videos. 

Oberoi’s lawyer has denied the accusations made against him by saying they were false and made with an intention to defame him. 

In a statement, said, “Allegations are false. We are taking the necessary steps to undo the damage that has been done and expose the person behind it.”  

He added, “Both of them initially had a casual chat but later, the woman started pressing Oberoi for various reasons. In order to extort money from him, she threatened to lodge a police complaint against him to defame him. When he refused to comply, the woman approached the police and registered a case on the basis of baseless allegations, after which Oberoi too approached the police and gave his statement.” 

Several of Oberoi’s celebrity friends including Pooja Bedi and members of A Band of Boys, Sherrin Varghese, Chin2 Bhosle and Sudhanshu Pandey had come out in his support by conducting a press conference.  

While the band members said he was most chivalrous among all of them and that they had never seen him behave inappropriately with a woman, Bedi had pointed out loopholes in the claims of the woman by even sharing some of their shared messages.

A day after the charge, Bedi spoke about the charges against Oberoi in an interview to a leading media publication. She said that Oberoi is one of the 'nicest, decent and kindest person' and that she cannot 'make sense' of all the charges against him.   

Narrating the incident of how the complainant and Oberoi met, she said that the two started seeing each other in 2016 and in 2018. Oberoi had filed an NC against the woman who then went on to give an interview saying that she has given him gifts as he is financially not that well-off. Highlighting the fact that the complainant just after a year she is now accusing him of 'rape', Bedi alleged that the woman is just distorting facts. She added that a 'false charge' can ruin a man's life and that women in these matters should also be questioned.   

Oberoi is known for work in serials like ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin’ and as a member of A Band of Boys and was last seen in ‘Inside Edge.’
