July 26 marks the victory of Indian soldiers in recapturing the mountain heights that were occupied by the Pakistani Army in the Kargil War. The day is remembered for the sacrifices made by the Indian security forces during the war and their victory over Pakistan's infiltration into Indian territory. In the lead up to the observance of the 20th Kargil Vijay Diwas which is under the theme 'Remember, Rejoice and Renew', there are various tributes dedicated to the martyrs by the Indian Army.

The war that took place between May and July of 1999 in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil district, was orchestrated by the then Pakistan army chief General Pervez Musharraf without awareness of the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Musharraf would later stage a coup and take over the Pakistan government.
