Bollywood superstar Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas got married as per Hindu traditions on December 2. And, while her family members and guests made merry at the luxurious heritage hotel of the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, the actor's ancestral home in Bareilly stood in a state of utter neglect.

The house showed not a single sign of celebration till Friday evening after which a few locals got in touch with the caretaker of the house to decorate it.

Parmeshwar Rai Pandey, the caretaker of Priyanka's paternal house, told News18, “The family is quite busy in the wedding and they might have forgotten to give attention to this house. The people of Bareilly, along with the district administration have showered love on their daughter by coming together and decorating the house.”

Pandey, who lives there alone, couldn’t manage the decoration on his own. Upon finding the house in such a state, members of the Radheyshyam Smriti Samaroh Ayojan Samiti, a social group, took it upon themselves to decorate the house. Several of Chopra's neighbours also came forward to lend a hand.

Not just this, the neighbours also illuminated their own houses to celebrate the momentous occasion. "Despite not getting any invitation of their bitiyaa's marriage, people of the city illuminated their houses with fairy lights and distributed sweets to celebrate the moment on Saturday," Parameshwar Rai Pandey told PTI.

Crackers were burst and people danced to different songs, Mr Pandey added. Priyanka's mother Madhu told PTI, "Through caretaker Parameshwar Pandey, I came to know that people in Bareilly are celebrating Priyanka's marriage, and I am proud of the residents."

"No wedding cards for Priyanka-Nick wedding were printed. Only selected persons were invited through the phone. We are getting congratulatory messages from people of Bareilly. Owing to a busy schedule, I am not able to say thanks. Thanks will be conveyed to all as soon as we get time," she added.

Owner of a chaat shop in Bareilly's Civil Lines, Chaman Kumar said, "To celebrate the wedding of Priyanka, a party has been organised for poor children."

Bareilly mayor Umesh Gautam even hosted a cultural programme at a private university to celebrate the occasion.
