Lootcase: Audience reactions to other adventure comedies in India

Multi-starrer film Total Dhamaal crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide in four days of its release. Bollywood is proving that laughter is the best medicine. This isn't the first time a film from the comedy genre has surpassed expectations and delivered phenomenal results. In fact, comedy and its many sub-genres have been a good bet for the film industry in the last few years. In 2017, five of the 10 highest-grossing films were comedies. Films like Badhaai Ho and Stree turned out to be sleeper hits of 2018 which belonged to the comedy genre as well.

In a recent interview with an online news agency, Saurabh Varma, CMO of Inox Leisure said, “The Indian audience loves going to movies. Watching films in cinemas all over India is like an event for the whole family during the weekend where no one minds a film that provides them with an option of escaping from the real world. Comedy works the best in the 'escape cinema' format.”

How have adventure comedies been received by the Indian audiences?

Many believe that Bollywood’s comedies are unintentionally funny or just silly, there still have been coming-of-age stories that tickled the audiences and made them think. for every film like the Masti franchise or Golmaal and its sequels, Bollywood has also produced movies like Khosla ka Ghosla, Hindi Medium, Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, among others.

From adventure to horror, Indian films have explored almost every skin of comedy. The surprising part is any form of comedy is now being accepted by the Indian audiences. Dark comedies like Newton and Andhadhun were some films that well received at the box office. They not only amazed the industry and critics with its content but also gained enough revenue to become a box office hit.

The Rajkumar Rao-starrer Newton, which had put the shed light on the election process in India, was India's entry for the 90th Oscars. In addition, the film reportedly did business of over Rs 22 crore with a budget of Rs 9 crore. These successes confirm that the taste of the Indian audience is changing and they enjoy subtle and layered humour rather than the old dragged humour.

Recently Kunal Kemmu starrer film Lootcase has been creating a lot of buzz among online audiences. The actor has posted many videos over his social media and thus making audiences impatient for the release of the film. This film is supposedly an adventure comedy, that revolves around a mysterious suitcase. The film is directed by Rajesh Krishnan. It features Kunal Khemu and Rasika Dugal in lead roles with Vijay Raaz and Ranvir Shorey in supporting roles.
