Mala Sinha is a former Indian Bollywood actress who has also worked in various other film industries such as Bengali and Nepali. She is recognized for her talent and beauty due to which she went on to become one of the top leading actresses in Hindi cinema in the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. Sinha has starred in over a hundred film productions. Some of her notable works include Pyaasa (1957), Anpadh (1962), Dil Tera Deewana (1962), Gumrah (1963), Bahurani (1963), Gehra Daag, Apne Huye Paraye, Jahan Ara, Himalay Ki Godh Mein (1965), Nai Roshni, Ankhen (1968), Maryada (1971) and Babu.

Facts about Mala Sinha

Mala Sinha was known to take up daring roles back then, which included a gold digger and played the first unwed mother in Hindi cinema. Reportedly, she was ahead of her time and it reflected in her choice of films and their box office collections which ruled the roost right up to 1974. Those were the days when women used to go to the theatres carrying handkerchiefs with them and used to weep when they saw their favourite heroines enduring hardships on the silver screen.

Mala Sinha was one of those heroines. Born into a Napalese Christian family and earlier named as Alda, Mala Sinha was the heartthrob of Indian audience during the era of the sixties. Reportedly, her friends teased her during the school days and called her Dalda, due to which she changed her name to Mala. It is said that she ruled the Bollywood industry for five decades which in itself is a big achievement.

Along with her acting skills, Mala also had a sweet vocal. She sang for All India Radio but never took it as a career in Bollywood. One more amazing fact about Mala is that she had worked as a child artist in Bengali films such as Jai Vaishno Devi, Shri Krishan Leela, Jog Biyog and Dhooli. Her major role as an adult was in Bengali film Roshanara in 1952.

It is also said that she was so afraid of her father that she used to come home in a simple traditional attire after shooting. She also used to cook food for herself. Mala Sinha had paired up with many newcomers of her era which included Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Khan, Jeetendra and Amitabh Bachchan. Factually, she also received the first credit in many films.
