Similarly to how an ‘i’ was removed and an ‘a’ added in ‘Padmavati’ to make the title ‘Padmaavat’, the Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao starrer has also put the word ‘Judge’ and an ‘l’ to convert the earlier title to ‘Judgementall Hai Kya’ after the makers were accused of insensitivity to mental illness. The makers shared that their decision was prompted by the need to be sensitive to the issue of mental health and to not offend anyone. The Central Board of Film Certification has cleared the film with a U/A certificate for release on July 26.
The news was confirmed by the official spokesperson of Balaji Motion Pictures, one of the producers, who released an official statement “Given the sensitivity attached to the issue of mental health and our intention of not offending or hurting anyone's sentiments, the makers have decided to change the title of Mental Hai Kya to Judgementall Hai Kya. CBFC has cleared the film with U/A certification with minor changes, which the makers are happy to comply with. With the CBFC clearance, the movie is all set to release on July 26.”
Kangana had recently confirmed that there would be a ‘mild’ change to the earlier title of the movie.
The row over the earlier ‘Mental Hai Kya’ title had erupted in April when the Indian Psychiatric Society had conveyed its objection to the CBFC. In their letter to the body's chief Prasoon Joshi, they had termed the title as “discriminative, stigmatising, degrading, inhumane in projecting mental disorders”.
At that time, even Deepika Padukone’s NGO on mental health, Live Laugh Love Foundation called for an end to the use of words or imagery that reinforces stereotypes of those suffering from mental illnesses.
At that time, the banner had released a statement, "The makers of the film, believe that their movie - 'Mental Hai Kya' will encourage people to embrace their individuality and distinctiveness. "'Mental Hai Kya' starring Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao marks the coming together of some of the most talented and responsible media personalities, who in no way intend to hurt anyone's sentiments," the statement read.
