Neena Gupta Sheds Light On Soni Razdan's Friendship With Late Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi

64-year-old filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi succumbed to Kidney cancer when she breathed her last on Sunday Morning in Mumbai. Reports suggest that the ailing filmmaker was struggling to meet financial ends while going through the treatment. Although there are reports that say, Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and many others from the Industry provided financial assistance to Kalpana Lajmi, it was reportedly actor Soni Razdan who was coordinating all the financial help for the late filmmaker. 

Actor Neena Gupta on Monday posted on her Instagram about Razdan's generous gestures. Sharing a picture with Soni Razdan on her Instagram, Neena Gupta wrote, "I have to tell u all how my dear friend soni has been helping financially and emotionally our friend kalpana lajmi and also alia bhatt and others fr helping out but soni was d one coordinating the help line fr our dear friend thank you soni god bless u"

On Sunday, upon hearing of Kalpana Lajmi's demise, Soni Razdan shared a heartfelt post on Instagram remembering her friend. In her post, Soni Razdan wrote, "My dear darling Kalpana has passed on into another world. I will miss her strong energetic voice, her incredible drive to create, even after she got so sick, her laughter that was always so full of real joy and her wonderful sense of humour. Most of all I will miss my movie partner. Almost every Friday or Saturday we would go see the latest film running in town. I can’t believe you’re gone Kalpana. RIP sweetheart ❤️"

Kalpana Lajmi, also the niece of legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt, started out in film industry as an assistant director to her maternal cousin and a noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal on the 1977 film 'Bhumika: The role'. The late Kalpana Lajmi made her directorial debut with a documentary 'D.G. Movie Pioneer' (1978) and directed her first feature film 'Ek Pal'  in 1986.  Following which, Lajmi went on to direct acclaimed films like 'Rudaali' (1993), 'Darmiyaan: In Between' (1997), 'Daman: A Victim Of marital violence' (2001), 'Kyon' (2003).

Kalpana Lajmi directed her last film 'Chingari' in 2006, but till date, she is best known for 'Rudaali' (1993) which won its lead actress, Dimple Kapadia a national award for best actress. 'Rudaali' was also India's official entry into the 66th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language film category.
