Inspired by the west, the #MeToo movement has gained traction in India with several women speaking up against and pointing out sexual perpetrators. It began when former Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta accused actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment on the sets of the 2008 film 'Horn Ok Pleasss'. The case became a huge deal with the help of social media as opposed to the time Dutta had made the allegations in the year 2008. Thereafter several Bollywood celebrities have taken a stand on the matter and condemned sexual harassment in workplace. Until now, several eminent personalities from the Indian film industry have also been accused of sexual harassment including Alok Nath, Rajat Kapoor, Varun Grover, Karim Morani, Sajid Khan, Luv Ranjan and Vikas Bahl to name a few.
Reacting to the recent happenings in the industry, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn tweeted, "I’m disturbed by all the happenings with regards to #MeToo. My company and I believe in providing women with utmost respect and safety. If anyone has wronged even a single woman, neither ADF nor I will stand for it."
In the month of August, it was announced that the Ajay Devgn starrer 'De De Pyaar De', which is presented by Luv Ranjan will be released in February 2019. Ajay Devgn had also signed to act in Luv Ranjan's next directorial. It is to be seen if the 'Ishq' actor steps back from these projects in the wake of these events.
On the other hand, Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has cancelled the shoot of his upcoming film Housefull 4' after allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the director Sajid Khan. Khan, himself has stepped down as the director of the film.
On October 10, the Producers Guild of India had set up a special committee within the Guild to address the issue of sexual harassment at the workplace within their industry. Following the back-to-back accusations against celebrities, the Producers Guild of India released a statement which read,
"Producers Guild of India extends its complete support to the movement to call out and report sexual harassment and abuse whenever and wherever it occurs in our industry. We believe that there is an urgent need to set up a robust process to ensure the highest standards of safety for employees and crew members at the workplace - whether in offices or on sets of productions. We are instituting a committee within the Guild to lead this effort, and we are determined to stay the course till workplaces in the industry are safe spaces for Everyone."
