#MeToo : 'Sexual Harassment Can Not And Should Not Be Tolerated Anymore,' Says Emraan Hashmi

  • Emraan Hashmi issues a statement on the #MeToo movement in the film industry

 Inspired by the west, the #MeToo movement has sure gained heat in India,with several women coming out and narrating horrific incidents, while revealing their sexual perpetrators. The movement was initiated with former Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta accusing actor Nana Patekar of misconduct on the sets of the film 'Horn Ok Pleassss'. The strong allegations sure garnered heavy response frm several quarters, in turn encouraging several women to speak up about sexual harassment incidents that happened with them. 

Names of several famous faces have surfaced as alleged sexual perpetrators. Famous comedians, directors, actors, media professionals and politicians have come up. The film industry is one of the most affected by the #MeToo movement. Names of popular actors, musicians, directors and producers have been brought into light through this movement.

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi recently posted a tweet addressing the #MeToo and how his production house is planning to make the work environment safer for women. 

He wrote, "Sexual harassment can not and should not be tolerated anymore. The guidelines need to be in place. We at EHF(Emraan Hashmi Films)  have taken a step to include the right clauses in our contracts where any gross misconduct of this nature will be looked into as a legal violation. These are baby steps, but we need to start somewhere."

On October 10, the Producers Guild of India had set up a special committee within the Guild to address the issue of sexual harassment at the workplace within their industry. 

Following the back-to-back accusations against celebrities, on Tuesday, the Producers Guild of India released a statement which read, 

"Producers Guild of India extends its complete support to the movement to call out and report sexual harassment and abuse whenever and wherever it occurs in our industry. We believe that there is an urgent need to set up a robust process to ensure the highest standards of safety for employees and crew members at the workplace - whether in offices or on sets of productions. We are instituting a committee within the Guild to lead this effort, and we are determined to stay the course till workplaces in the industry are safe spaces for Everyone."
