The #MeToo movement continues to gather steam with new names emerging day-by-day. Drawing from the movement against sexual harassment that struck Hollywood last year, this path-breaking campaign was indeed much needed. From veteran actors like Alok Nath and Nana Patekar, A-list comedians of All India Bakchod (AIB) to the Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar, several have been accused of sexual harassment. As the #MeToo movement is sweeping the entertainment industry in India, the 77-year-old veteran actor Asrani dismissed the movement and stated that it is all being done for promotions.
Speaking to ANI, he said, "I support women, everyone should, but all this is mostly for publicity, part of film promotions and nothing else. All this is rubbish, and 90 per cent lie, just to sell it to magazines and for popularity."
He termed the accusations against various actors as 'filmy things'."Accusations and blames are all filmy things. Mere accusations mean nothing, don't take this seriously. If you publish Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography, no one will read it but if it's Madhuri Dixit's or Madhubala's autobiography people will come and read it."
The #MeToo movement began a year ago in Hollywood after The New York Times and The New Yorker published various stories about decades-long predation of movie producer Harvey Weinstein. The movement gained pace in India after Tanushree Dutta accused Nata Patekar of harassing her while shooting for a special dance number for 'Horn Okk Pleasss' in 2008. Following the revelation, many celebrities from the Bollywood film fraternity such as Nana Patekar, Vivek Agnihotri, Chetan Bhagat, Alok Nath, Vikas Bahl, Rajat Kapoor, Kailash Kher, Zulfi Syed, Utsav Chakrabarty, and Gursimran Khamba have been accused of sexual misconduct.
Renowned writer Chetan Bhagat has been accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous victim after she shared screenshots of her chat with the author. While Alok Nath has been accused of rape by popular 90's show 'Tara' producer Vinta Nanda. In a detailed post on Facebook, she also mentioned that Alok Nath was an alcoholic, and accused him of allegedly being inappropriate with the lead actress of the show, Navneet Nishan.
Several Bollywood A-listers have spoken out in support of all those victims of sexual misconduct. From Priyanka Chopra, Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Twinkle Khanna, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker, Sophie Chaudhary, to Farhan Akhtar, and others are supporting all those raising their voice against this practice.
