'People Cannot Be Punished For Thinking About Crime', Says Swara Bhasker On The Urban Naxal Case

Swara Bhasker spoke about the Urban Naxal case at a recent press conference

Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker has been very vocal about her opinion on topics pertaining to various social issues in India. She has never shied away from putting out her thoughts on social media. Recently the actress made her stand clear on the Urban Naxal case that has taken over the nation, in a series of tweets and retweets.

During a press conference, the actress further spoke about the ongoing Urban Naxal case which resulted in the arrest of four activists and the detention of one. Swara said that she wants freedom for all but also basic simple decent conduct in public. She further said that when the police complaint was filed with the term ‘Urban Naxal’ and when the television started using the term, it was bizarre and ridiculous. The actress also said that you can only punish a person for a crime he has committed and not punish someone for thinking about a crime. That way she feels the jails will be soon filled.

On Tuesday, August 28, the Pune Police carried out raids at the residence of people who were suspected to have Maoists links. The raids were in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence. Following the raid, activists  Varavara Rao, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Arun Ferreira, who were alleged as Maoists sympathizers were detained, while Gautam Navlakha had been put under house arrest after Delhi High Court stayed his detention.

Talking about sending people to jail, Swara said that there a lot of people who were celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s death and they are currently in power and questioned whether they too deserve to be in jail.

Meanwhile, Swara Bhasker who was last seen in the film 'Veere Di Wedding', will next be seen in the season 2 of the web series 'It's Not That Simple'.
