After Salman Khan denied he is contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, his ‘Chal Mere Bhai’ co-star Sanjay Dutt has followed suit. The actor stated that he stands with the country and will be in ‘full support’ for his sister Priya Dutt as he urged the citizens of the country to vote in big numbers.
The 59-year-old took to Twitter on Monday and wrote, “The rumor about me contesting for the Loksabha elections is not true. I stand with my country and in full support for my sister @PriyaDutt_INC. I urge everyone to come out in maximum numbers and cast their vote for our nation!”
Earlier this month, reports had surfaced that Sanjay could contest the elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad constituency as a part of the Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party alliance.
For the unversed, the ‘Musafir’ star had ventured into politics by joining the Samajwadi Party in 2009. But he had quit a year later and called his decision a ‘mistake.’
His late father, actor-director Sunil Dutt represented Congress and was Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports in the Dr. Manmohan Singh government when he passed away in 2005. He was also a Member of Parliament from Mumbai North-west constituency. The seat that got vacated after Dutt's death was won by his daughter Priya Dutt.
According to reports, Priya Dutt will be contesting from Mumbai North-Central constituency this time. She had earlier this year stated that she won't fight in the elections, but later changed her mind on insistence from party President Rahul Gandhi.
It is said to be a repeat of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls where she had fought against Bharatiya Janata Party's Poonam Mahajan. The BJP candidate had won the battle then.
