Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Zero’ has underperformed at the box office and those associated with the movie are set to face substantial losses.
After opening to mixed reviews on December 21, the Aanand L Rai directorial didn’t live up to expectations at the box office. The movie has collected around Rs 90 crore in India in its run of almost two weeks, according to a trade report, and with the New Year, any hopes of the movie springing a turnaround are over.
The collections on January 1 was Rs 1.25 crore and it would now be hard for ‘Zero’ to touch Rs 1 crore-mark on a day from now on. The Anushka Sharma-Katrina Kaif starrer might not even touch the three-figure mark at the box office.
One of the major reasons for that is because Ranveer Singh-Rohit Shetty’s ‘Simmba’ has stormed the box office, earning close to Rs 125 crore in five days, becoming the first choice for moviegoers. Kannada movie ‘KGF: Chapter 1’, which has been dubbed in multiple languages, is also going strong with worldwide collections crossing Rs 150 crore.
While Rs 90 crore is not a minuscule amount usually, the reason why it is a small figure for the makers of ‘Zero’ is because of the massive budget the movie is mounted on. The cost of making the romantic drama, including production, VFX and marketing, is rumoured to be Rs 200 crore.
The recovery through overseas collections, satellite rights, music rights, digital rights etc, will only be able to bridge the deficit to an extent. The makers and distributors stare at a substantial loss. SRK’s last movie ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ was also a failure at the box office.
