Director Anubhav Sinha is back with 'Thappad' which released in theatres worldwide on Friday, February 28. Thappad features Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu playing an educated, upper-middle-class woman who is forced to take stock of her relationship after being slapped by her husband. Taapsee's character in the film is a housewife by choice and, according to the director, it was worth exploring to see how a woman of today takes that decision.

First trailer of Thappad was released by the makers earlier last month was an eye-opener for many as it made them uncomfortable with its premise. Anubhav Sinha, who has previously helmed films like Mulk and Article 15, attempts to show the reality of the society through Thappad.
The trailer starts with Amrita in conversation with her lawyer after her husband, played by Pavail Gulati, slaps her. She is seen telling her lawyer that even though it was just a slap but he cannot hit her. In the trailer, it is shown that the couple are much in love until the male lead hits Amrita.
The trailer also shows how the society considers a slap a trivial matter and asks a woman to compromise. The trailer ends with Taapsee talking about how the one slap affected her. She says, "Pata hai uss thappad se kya hua. Mujhe woh saari cheeze saaf saaf dikhne lag gayi jise main undekha karke move on karti ja rahi thi."

#Thappad is legally correct but far away from reality. A slap from either gender is wrong but can nvr be a cause for DIVORCE for something that happened in the heat of a moment

Taapsee, Bollywood's precious ♥️@taapsee #ThappadReview
#Thappad is a film for everyone. Even though it fights patriarchy, it’s informed, sensitive, and creates an environment that doesn’t glorify any of the two sides. @anubhavsinha Hats off 👏🏼. @taapsee delivers easily one of her best performances ❤️👏🏼
— Jash (@jashtchill) February 28, 2020
The only thing better than seeing so many wonderful women actors (Ratna Pathak Shah, Maya Sarao, Tanvi Azmi, Taapsee Pannu etc) sharing the screen in #Thappad is the central point of the film: There's no such thing as an acceptable violation.
— Deepanjana (@dpanjana) February 28, 2020
What a super job @anubhavsinha @taapsee 👏👏👏 The message is so so important for all of us and most importantly for the upcoming generation #Thappad

#Thappad is quite a layered script, the deeply rooted problems in our and previous generations make you uncomfortable. Best part, it was’t thrown in my face but rather shown in a subtle way. @anuragkashyap72 @taapsee @deespeak @pavailkgulati & rest of the cast were so good!

"Dearest Tapsee and Team Thappad,
As this story makes it’s way into people’s hearts from today, just wanted to say, YOU ARE AMAZING.
For thinking, feeling, responding to and sharing something so basic. So necessary. So needed : Love, respect and honesty for one and all 🧡🦁🤗🙌🏼 For being fearless and convinced by the honesty of the truth’s that have compelled this narrative.
Keep telling stories. Keep being you.
All my love and gratitude,

The makers of the film have kept the details of the character played by Dia Mirza in wraps throughout the promotional stint of the movie. Although, the actor has actively voiced her happiness and pride in being an important part of Anubhav Sinha's Thappad. At the screening of the film, Dia Mirza had said that she knew she would be a part of Thappad as soon as she heard the thematic line of the film. It didn't matter to her what her role would entail as she only wanted a story, such as the film's, to be heard by the audience.

Thappad is off to a slow start in Indian theatres. The film has opened to an occupancy of 10-15% in the morning shows across India. It is expected to witness substantial growth in the evening and over the weekend. On Day 1, Thappad is set to have an estimated collection of about 2.2 crore at the Box-Office. The film has the advantage of being a solo Box-Office release this week and also becomes the third female-oriented film since the beginning of this year after Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak and Kangana Ranaut's Panga.
