India's Me Too movement began soon after Tanushree Dutta's allegations against Nana Patekar of misconduct. Several women have come forward and have shared their Me Too stories exposing their predators. While many big names have surfaced during the movement, just recently, writer-lyricist-comedian Varun Grover was accused of ‘touching’ a fellow student inappropriately while studying at IT-BHU, Varanasi in 2001.
A few hours after the anonymous girl's accusations against the writer, Varun Grover immediately denied the allegations and termed it as “misleading” and “defamatory”. The lyricist has yet again denied being ‘involved in any such incident with anybody’ in his entire life.
In an open letter, Varun Grover has clarified the fact that he had only 36 women studying with him in the university, out of which four of them were a part of the theater group. And, according to him, all these four women not only expressed their solidarity but also checked with the remaining 32 if such an incident happened. All the women denied any such incident taking place ever.
He shared an elaborate post on Twitter in which he wrote his side of the story, here's an excerpt,
''Revolutions are beautiful. They are cathartic, powerful, necessary, and like #metoo — inevitable. And revolutions, inevitably, have some collateral damage too. Last week has been a whirlwind of sorts in my life. Amidst the distress and confusion, I have discovered the kind solidarity of many strangers. I was at the receiving end of an anonymous allegation that I know and can prove to be false. In the macro perspective, the wave is bigger and way more important than my isolated small case. Centuries of patriarchy and oppression have created a system that cannot be taken down through polite means. However, at the same time, my isolated small case does mean the world to me, my family and friends. It affects not just my mental health and professional life but my ability to take a social stand on every injustice I want to speak about. And therefore, I feel this earnest need to present my side even though no formal complaint has been filed against me. This closure is needed to maintain my own sanity. I categorically deny the allegations in their entirety as completely baseless fabrications. I have never been involved in any such incident with anybody in my entire life.''
