Amid the controversy, the lead actor Anupam Kher, who has stepped into the shoes of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, spoke exclusively to Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami.

When asked if he had caricatured Dr Singh, Kher replied, “Caricature is copying somebody. I have not copied anybody.”

On being queried if certain incidents were overblown with the portrayal, the actor said, “Our reference point is according to Sanjay Baru’s book.”

Kher added, “It may not suit certain people, but that is what history is all about. We are talking about Mangalyaan and all our other achievements. Does the audience not deserve to see what happens in the PMO. How long are we going to caricature the so-called cliched politicians? It’s time that India can make a film about the actual Prime Minister or the ex-Prime Minister and show what happens in the PMO. And show what the cabinet secretary does, show what the press secretary does, show what the high command does.”

'The Accidental Prime Minister' traces the making and the unmaking of the former PM Dr Manmohan Singh. It is based on a book of the same name by Sanjaya Baru, a former media advisor to Dr Manmohan Singh. Besides Anupam Kher, the film also stars Suzanne Bernert as UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, Aahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi and Arjun Mathur as Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress party has accused the film of wrongly portraying the Gandhis, party and Manmohan Singh, and also accused the filmmakers of distorting the facts. But according to Anupam Kher, the film is just depicting what was written in the book, and that the criticism and threats are not warranted. 'The Accidental Prime Minister' releases on January 11.
