Love may be a many splendoured thing in Hindi cinema down the ages but playful stalking, a contradiction in terms really, is often cute and brooding aggression spilling over to violence and self-destruction the hallmark of intense, macho love.

With "Kabir Singh", a remake of the Telugu hit "Arjun Reddy", the spotlight is once again on Indian cinema's problematic portrayal of romance and its preoccupation with toxic male heroes. The film, which triggered a debate on the gender dynamic in Bollywood romances, has been panned by critics as misogynistic for its portrayal of the doctor who spirals into destructive rage when the object of his desire gets married to somebody else.

Defending the criticism received, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who helmed both Arjun Readdy and Kabir Singh in an interview said: "When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there."

Reacting to the statement, Kubbra Sait, who was last seen playing the character 'Kuckoo' in Netflix India’s first original show 'Sacred Games' took to her Instagram handle to lash out at the director but in a sarcastic and humourous way. The video features Sonali Bendre's husband Goldie Behl too and the both are seen slapping each other wearing oven mitts. Kubbra also posted another video of slapping herself on her Instagram story describing it as 'self love'. Watch the video above.

Kubbra captioned the video by saying: "(I am being sarcastic! No sir it’s not the way one defines love. That’s a toxic real time relationship. It shouldn’t exist.)" Watch the video below -

Vanga said he wanted to move beyond the 'boy-meets-girl' love story. "It is about this character, who has a specific way of looking at a girl, a specific way of expressing his emotions and his love for her. It is about how his life changes suddenly due to love. Love changes things," Vanga told PTI.

The film has come for severe criticism from film critics for the way it celebrates an obnoxious hero, who calls the woman "meri bandi" the moment he lays his eyes on her and warns everyone in the college that she is off-limits for every other man.
