Anupam Kher, who is considered one of the most respected veteran actors in Indian cinema and abroad, is ready with his next big film. This is truly a special one for it is based on the life of Dr Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of the country. Titled as The Accidental Prime Minister, the movie is based on the book of the same name which was penned by political commentator and PM Singh's media chief during the first UPA Sanjaya Baru. Earlier on, Anupam had clarified that the trailer of the film will be out on December 27 and as promised it has been unveiled.
The trailer shows the story from the point of view of Sanjaya Baru who is played by Akshaye Khanna and Dr Manmohan Singh (Anupam Kher) himself. It starts off with Dr Singh being appointed as the Prime Minister by UPA chairperson and then Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi, followed by his swearing-in ceremony.
However, it soon becomes clear that he is not as much in command as he had thought(or hoped!). There is a line that really stands out and points to this fact: When Sanjaya Baru's character says that he is working for the Prime Minister, a Congress loyalist smugly replies that the 'PM works for the party though'.
This tone is maintained throughout the film as it is shown in several instances that Dr Singh and Sonia Gandhi did not agree on many issues of national importance such as over Kashmir, as well as the nuclear deal. Overall, it is a trailer that is guaranteed to pique your curiosity to the maximum.
Coming to Anupam Kher, he has nailed the character of the former Prime Minister and famed economist to perfection. From the gait, clothes, body language, right down to the voice tonality and accent, he has not missed a single beat, although that is not surprising as he is a brilliant performer. Even though he really stands out, all other actors seemed to have done a splendid job as well making it one unmissable political drama.
Moreover, before the trailer came out, the anticipation for the film has been massive. When Anupam Kher's first look as Manmohan Singh first came out, everyone was bowled over by how uncannily similar he looked to the actual political figure. Moreover, he also released a special preview video where he had nailed the ex-Prime Minister's walk down pat which also featured Akshaye Khanna. Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, the movie is all set to release on January 11, 2019.
