'We Have To Believe Them'; Neha Dhupia On India's #MeToo Movement

In the wake of the ‘#MeToo’ movement that struck Hollywood recently, Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta accused veteran actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment on the sets of  ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’ in 2008.

The 2004 Miss India Pageant Winner has been making the headlines ever since. The 34-year-old claimed Nana Patekar misbehaved with her making her feel uncomfortable while shooting a special song for the film. In addition to Patekar, the actress accused renowned choreographer Ganesh Acharya, Sami Siddiqui and director Rakesh Sarang of harassing her while filming the song.

On Monday, actress Neha Dhupia shared her take on the matter. When asked about the '#MeToo' movement the ‘Singh Is King’ actress said,

"As a woman and not just as an actor, it made me angry and furious. The fact that women are coming out and speaking about is very brave. I think there is no need to question it. We have to believe them."

Several celebrities have come out in support of the actress including Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan, Sonam Kapoor, Simi Garewal, Twinkle Khanna, Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Ayushmann Khurrana, Renuka Shahane, Anurag Kashyap, Kajol, Kangana Ranaut, Esha Gupta, Freida Pinto, Kunal Kapoor, Lisa Ray, Koena Mitra and Raveena Tandon to name a few. While several celebrities have maintained silence on the issue including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Kalki Koechlin, and Shakti Kapoor to name a few.

Tanushree Dutta has filed a police complaint against Nana Patekar at Oshiwara for sexual harassment on the sets of her 2008 film 'Horn Ok Pleassss' while the duo was filming for a song sequence. Meanwhile, Republic TV exclusively got in touch with Tanushree Dutta's lawyer where he shared that if the FIR gets registered against Nana Patekar and others accused, he might get imprisonment upto 10 years. Speaking about the legal proceedings, Tanushree's team is planning to take, he further shared, "Tanushree feels that every woman should have a safe environment in their workplace. So, she is moving to the High Court for the implementation of Vishakha case judgment passed by the Supreme Court. She wants this to be implemented in every professional platform. Like Vishakha committee, Tanushree committee should be formed in the Cine Artistes' Association to readdress the issue of sexual harassment issues at the workplace."
