'What a memorable and beautiful journey': Aamir Khan reminisces the making of 'Lagaan' as the iconic film clocks 18 years

Oscar-nominated film 'Lagaan' clocked 18 years on Sunday, June 16. The sports drama, released in 2001, starring Aamir Khan in the lead made its place in the history of Indian cinema. It was not only acclaimed for the storyline but was also a blockbuster. 

The film set in the backdrop of the British Era, tells the story of a small village where people were burdened with high taxes. With no rain one monsoon, the condition of the villagers worsen, but the story takes a turn when an officer challenges the villagers to play cricket as a wager to avoid taxes. In a bid to improve their conditions, the villagers accept the challenge, learns the game and emerge victorious at the end of the film.

As the release of the film completed 18 years, Aamir Khan took to social media and shared an emotional note reminiscing the making of 'Lagaan'. In a recent Twitter post, he thanked director Ashutosh Gowariker who had written the iconic movie, and the rest of the crew members.

Sharing a poster of the film, he wrote, "Thank you @AshGowariker, and thanks to everyone who has been a part of Lagaan. What a memorable and beautiful journey."

The movie also featured debutant Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne in pivotal roles. 'Lagaan' produced by Aamir was nominated at the Oscars 2002 in the Best Foreign Language film. Besides 'Lagaan' only two movies have been nominated in the category so far- 'Mother India' (1957), 'Salaam Bombay!' (1988).

The movie that locked horn with 'Lagaan' was 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' that set the cash registers ringing. Though both the movies are a period drama, 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' starring Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel is more of a romantic drama. Movies like 'Lagaan' sets is a benchmark for the industry and are meant to be cherished forever.
