World Mental Health Day: Deepika Padukone Urges People To Share Their Story On Mental Illness By Using #NotAshamed

Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone who has battled depression, posted a video urging people to share their story on mental illness using the #NotAshamed

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone took to social media and shared a video of herself speaking about her diagnosis and urging people to come forward with their stories of mental health illness. The actress said, "In 2014, I was diagnosed with clinical depression. But in India, 90 percent of people who suffer from depression, don't seek help. Depression  is like any other illness that requires intervention. So if you are someone who has experienced any form of mental illness, I urge you  to share your story by using the #NotAshamed."

The 'Padmaavat' actress has often spoken about the phase when she was suffering from depression.  In 2015, she had revealed that during the shoot of her film 'Happy New Year', she was struggling to go for work each day. It was after she broke out in front of her mother, did she seek professional help from a doctor suggested by her mother. After talking to the psychologist she found out that she has been suffering from anxiety and depression.

Recently, at an event in Delhi she had said that coping with mental illness affects both the individuals and members of their immediate family. She said that there was not much information available from where she could learn and equip herself.Deepika had said in earlier interviews that she was initially reluctant to go for medication, as she thought her condition could be resolved through conversation. But with her emotions and feelings not getting stable, she opted for medication and felt much better with time. 

On the work front, the actress was last seen in the film 'Padmaavat'. Recently, the actress said that she will be turning producer for her next project with Meghna Gulzar, which will be based on the life of the acid attack survivor Lakshmi. Padukone will also be playing the titular role in the film.
