Taking to Instagram, the diva posted an old joke on the institution of marriage. It simply read, "Whoever invented marriage was creepy as hell. Like I love you so much I'm gonna get the government involved so you can't leave." Her post was, of course, meant to be taken with a pinch of salt, but some people actually got offended by it.

Comments ranged from, "You are a negative minded woman", to "This is an insult to the beauty of marriage". Some also asked her to change her thoughts about marriage and that as an Indian she respect the institution. One even said that she should not try to teach others how to live their lives and it was great to know that some people still believed in traditions. Another netizen commented, "Completely illogical... first of all, if you don't want the government to get involved don't register it... You can refer Google to read the story of Rishi Uddalaka and Swetketu, why marriage is institutionalized in Hinduism... And if you don't want to get married just stop making joke." Well, it is clear from these comments that her joke completely backfired and instead the trolls ended up trying to school her. However, it seems like Sushmita was unfazed by it all as she had a witty comeback with another post as she wrote, "Moral of the story...’ A #joke can lead to detention’  #guilty of a #senseofhumor #lol I love you guys!!!"
