'Avengers: Infinity War' was one of the most profitable films for MCU. One of the biggest reasons for the film doing so well is the movie's ending, which shows mad titan Thanos emerge as the victor. In spite of dozens of superheroes and armies standing against him, he completes his quest for the Infinity stones and succeeds in his endgame. But the ending raises a very fundamental question that could be a glaring loophole or a stroke of brilliance on the maker's part.
So, in the climax of 'Infinity War', Thanos gets the Infinity Gauntlet working and snaps his fingers, thus decimating half the universe. But he reveals that the whole wiping out of life was truly random and he had nothing to do with who gets to go. Well, if that's the case then Thanos is also a part of the universe. So what's the guarantee that he did not wipe himself out of existence? Well, there is none, even though there are half-hearted theories that claim that he can't kill himself.
According to these theories, Thanos is an all-powerful cosmic being so he probably cannot die so easily. Others suggest that the gauntlet follows the will of the wielder, so he obviously will not kill himself. But there are two reasons why the alternative might be true.
Grief over killing Gamora
It is clear from the movie that the only thing Thanos remotely cared about was his adopted daughter Gamora. However, when he has to sacrifice her to attain the Soul Stone, we can see him visually breaking down. After the events at Vormir, the mad titan was in grief throughout the movie. After losing the only thing that mattered to him, he might have very well committed harakiri after accomplishing his goal. This can be backed by the fact that when he snaps his fingers he enters a dream-like state which many speculate happens inside the Soul Stone.
Russo brothers don't deny it
That's right! The very makers of the movie don't deny it as a possibility. During a talk with some students, one member of the audience raised this exact same question. To this, the brothers replied that it is very possible that through random selection, Thanos may have wiped himself out of existence. After all, he never excludes himself from his plans and plays fair. The directors also pointed out how right before he disappears after the snap, he has a very interesting look on his face, as if he was surprised.
So there you have it, Thanos might have very well committed suicide at the end of 'Infinity War', willingly or unwillingly. What fate do you think has befallen the mad Titan, let us know!
