Months after being fired by Disney over series of offensive tweets, filmmaker James Gunn has been reinstated as writer-director of 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3'.

The decision to rehire the 51-year-old filmmaker, who had been behind both of the previous installments of the Marvel franchise, came after the cast members of the series signed an open letter pleading for his return.

Gunn came under massive controversy last July over nearly a decade old tweets joking about the subjects like rape and paedophile after which the Walt Disney Studios chairman, Alan Horn, had termed his behaviour “indefensible” and had cut off ties with him.

Representatives for the Walt Disney Co. and for James Gunn on Friday confirmed on his return as writer-director of the Marvel franchise he has guided from the start.

“I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the last few months,” Gunn said in a statement on Twitter. “I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be.'

Gunn earlier apologized for the tweets, which he called “unfortunate efforts to be provocative.” The “Guardians” cast, including Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and other stars, supported Gunn in an open letter. “Although I don’t support James Gunn’s inappropriate jokes from years ago, he is a good man,” Pratt had said.

While he was removed from the third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, he was signed on to write and direct the next installment of Warner Bros.′ “Suicide Squad” for the Marvel rival DC Comics. That film is to shoot in the fall and be released in August 2021. An agreement has been made that production will begin after Gunn has completed his work on the DC sequel.

Furthermore, his original script, written before his dismissal, will be used for the film.

Meanwhile, Marvel Studios unveiled a brand new trailer of 'Avengers: Endgame' on March 14 and as expected, the trailer is a visual spectacle. Looking at it, one can say that the climactic conclusion for the Avengers franchise is going to be mind-blowing.
