"Put On A Happy Face": The Intense Trailer Of 'Joker' Tells The Origin Story Of The Iconic DC Villain

The much-awaited trailer of 'Joker' released on Wednesday, April 3 and the film is intense from the very first visuals. The film tells the story of one of Batman's most notorious enemies, the Joker, the character that managed to mark its place in history with his iconic looks and witty dialogues. The American crime film is expected to portray the journey of Arthur, a struggling stand-up comedian, who eventually becomes a psychopathic murderer, the Joker.

It stars Joaquin Phoenix as the classic bad boy of DC universe. The trailer opens with Phoenix's Arthur aka joker in therapy, where he can be heard saying "My mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face. She told me I had a purpose, to bring laughter and joy to the world," in the voiceover while the video features him helping bathe his mother, played by actor Frances Conroy.

In the following scene, Arthur can be seen bullied and attacks in the streets of Gotham which eventually leads him to choose the path of darkness. "Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there," he says.

He can be seen trying out different Joker outfits, before finally dying his hair green and featuring in his signature costume.

"I used to think my life was a tragedy. But now I realize, it's a comedy," he says in the final statement.

Releasing the trailer, the makers announced that the film is all set to hit the theatres on October 4, this year. 

Helmed by Todd Phillips, the film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy and Brett Cullen in the lead roles. The crime drama is the first film in a series of DC-based films separate from the shared DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It is jointly scripted by director Phillips and Scott Silver and is produced under the banner of Warner Bros. and DC Films. The filming of the movie has reportedly started and it is scheduled to hit the theatres on October 4, 2019.
