The adaptation of the 1998 Hollywood musical 'Cats' is all set to hit the silver screen as the makers have finally announced a release date for the upcoming venture. According to the media reports, the musical comedy-drama is scheduled to hit the silver screen on December 20, 2019.

The film which is originally based on T. S. Eliot's book 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' that depicts the story of a tribe of cats, called the "Jellicle Tribe", who meet once a year for an annual cat event 'Jellicle Ball', where they rejoice with their leader, Old Deuteronomy. During the event, one of the eligible cats, selected by Old Deuteronomy, gets a chance to be reborn and come back to a different life after being permitted to go through the Heaviside Layer. In the event night, they make which is called as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer.

The previous film was produced by filmmaker Andrew Lloyd Webber starred Hollywood celebrities including Elaine Paige, John Mills, Ken Page, Rosemarie Ford, Michael Gruber, John Partridge, Aeva May, Jacob Brent and Susan Jane Tanner. It hit theatres on October 5, 1998, and was widely lauded by the audience. This time the cast reportedly includes Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden in the lead roles. The production of the film is all set to kickstart later this year in the United Kingdom. It will be directed by filmmaker Tom Hooper, who has previously helmed movies like 'Les Misérables', 'The King's Speech', 'The Danish Girl', etc.

However, the release of the film might clash with several other films that are slated to release during the same time. The date was that was previously occupied by another movie musical, 'Wicked', it will open opposite the next untitled Star Wars film, 'Episode IX' helmed by J.J. Abrams. It will also coincide with Fox's upcoming flick 'Death on the Nile' which is a sequel of 2017 mystery-drama 'Murder on the Orient Express' starring Kenneth Branagh, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp in the pivotal roles.
