Martin Scorsese recently commented about 'Marvel' movies, where he stated superhero movies are similar to “theme parks” and do not capture the real essence of cinema. Following in the footsteps of Marvel filmmakers James Gunn and Joss Whedon, actor Samuel L. Jackson, expressed his opinions on the matter, which was reported by a global media publication.

Jackson reacts on Scorsese’s remarks

Samuel L. Jackson, upset over Scorsese’s remarks, pointed out the fact that not everyone happens to be a fan of all things Scorsese either. He explained that films are films, no matter if they are realistic or not, it's like saying Bugs Bunny isn't funny. He also added that not everybody will take a liking to Scorsese’s style of movies either.

The actor further added that he respects Martin’s opinions and that his opinions couldn’t stop anybody from making superhero movies. Jackson's comments came in response to an interview Scorsese recently gave, in which the legendary filmmaker compared the superhero films to theme parks. The Oscar-winning filmmaker declared the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as "not cinema" during an interview while promoting his upcoming movie 'The Irishman'.

Not fond of people judging things without actually seeing them: Gunn

The director also added that the closest he can ever think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.

The filmmaker's comments have drawn extremely critical reactions on Twitter. 'The Avengers' director Joss Whedon responded on Twitter, "I first think of @JamesGunn, how his heart and guts are packed into GOTG. I revere Marty, and I do see his point, but Well there's a reason why 'I'm always angry'," (the latter a reference to Bruce Banner's famous Avengers line).

He also added that Martin Scorsese is one of his five favourite living filmmakers, but he was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. He also wrote that he is sad by the fact that he's now judging Marvel movies in the same way. Gunn concluded by stating that he is not fond of people judging things without actually seeing them, whether it's a movie about Jesus or a genre.

Robert Cargill, who wrote the screenplay for 'Doctor Strange', called Scorsese a "genius," but said, "anyone who thinks Marvel is only trying to make theme park rides is being unjust and cynical."
