In the biggest development in the all-conquering Marvel Universe since the release of the game-changing Avengers: Infinity War, the first teaser for the penultimate film in the series, Captain Marvel, has been released, along with a teaser poster.

There has been an enormous amount of anticipation for Captain Marvel -- this despite it being the first film to feature the eponymous character and coming at such a late stage in the series. There are a number of reasons for this, some of which also come to the fore in the trailer, such as it being the first of 21 Marvel films till-date (including Captain Marvel) to feature a female character in the lead role, and also, on account of said character being 'at a scale of power hitherto unseen in the series', as per its creators.

The trailer begins with Brie Larson crashlanding into Earth, the Blockbuster video store making amply clear that the film is set in the 90s. A younger Nick Fury's (Samuel L Jackson's) narration is about 'war being a universal language'. He begins to talk about a space invasion, just as an alien craft materialises out of thin air just outside Earth. Interspersed with shots of Brie Larson's 'hand beams', Fury speaks about how he was on the verge of retirement until he encountered someone who wasn't 'from around here' -- her. Larson explains that she remembers being an earthling, even as images from her past flash on screen. In quick bursts, audiences get glimpses of her current 'alien warrior' life, including Jude Law and others, plus the Kree 'Accuser' Ronan, who was the main villain in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, and the fictional Skrull species. Finally, after Nick Fury's pager from the end of Infinity War also makes an appearance, Brie Larson makes her transition into Captain Marvel in a riot of Red, Blue and Gold.

Captain Marvel is played by Brie Larson and the film releases on March 8, months before the big conclusion of the series (as we know it) -- Avengers 4, which is, at this point, heavily rumoured to be titled Avengers: End Game.
