The white face with weird eye makeup, broad smile and green hair has been the signature look of the character. Phoenix looked crooked enough as he put on the clown-like makeup and the very first appearance of the actor has raised the bar of expectations high for the audience.

Previously, on Monday, September 17, 2018, director Todd Phillips announced Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic Batman villain and shared the first look of the Hollywood star from the upcoming untitled 'Joker' origin film. However, in the picture, the actor was not seen in the look of the deceitful Joker. He was photographed normally, dressed in an olive colour jacket over an off-white shirt, but the smirk on his face justified his role as the Joker. The director also announced the real name of the character drawing a conclusion to all speculations as he captioned the post as, "Arthur"

The upcoming film tells the story of one of Batman's most notorious enemies, the Joker, the character that managed to mark its place in history with his iconic looks and witty dialogues. Although the plot of the film is yet to be revealed, it is expected to portray the journey of Arthur, a struggling stand-up comedian, who eventually becomes a psychopathic murderer, the Joker.

Other than Phoenix, the film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy and Brett Cullen in the lead roles. The crime drama is the first film in a series of DC-based films separate from the shared DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It is jointly scripted by director Phillips and Scott Silver and is produced under the banner of Warner Bros. and DC Films. The filming of the movie has reportedly started and it is scheduled to hit the theatres on October 4, 2019.
