'Thugs Of Hindostan' Movie Review: Amitabh Bachchan-Aamir Khan’s Smooth Performances Fail To Anchor This Sinking Predictable Tale

One of the much-awaited films, touted to be one of its kind, starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Katrina Kaif, finally released this Diwali with much aplomb. The makers, who refrained from any promotion gimmick pre-release were confident of the gravity a multi-starrer film of this stature holds. Needless to say, the audience waited with bated breaths to watch the film on the celluloid. Was it worth it? Read below to find out.

Setting The Scene 

Made on a big budget under the banner of Yash Raj Films, ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ opens to the story of a royal family with Rohit Roy as the Badshaah, who doesn’t bat an eyelid in the face of fear. Little did he know that his castle of happiness would crumble a few minutes into the film as the ‘Company’ aka members of the British army attempt to conquer his estate. Long story short, much like any other conventional story, the family gets tricked by the head of the British army named Clive, thus paving the way for a twisted tale of revenge and drama sprinkled with love. 

Plot 

Khudabaksh aka Amitabh Bachchan is a loyalist of the royal family that loses its empire and wealth after British invasion, leaving behind their young daughter Zafira. Over the period of 11 years, she becomes a warrior seeking revenge for her family and helping Khudabaksh in his conquest for freedom. A parallel story of Firangi aka Aamir Khan sees the actor in a desi version of Jack Sparrow whose character is established as a shrewd traitor in the first few minutes of his entry. In a mission to catch hold of Azad (Khudabaksh), Firangi sets on a journey of a lifetime without knowing what it holds for him. The film moves around the tips and tricks of Aamir’s character which makes one lose sight of a constructive plot. 

Verdict 

‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ helmed by Vijay Krishna Acharya draws uncanny resemblance from hit international franchise ‘Pirates Of The Carribean’. From the costumes and makeup to the placement of characters, one can draw many similarities between the two, including a larger than life background score. With a jerky cinematography, this film fails to grip you even during the much-promoted sword fight sequence between Aamir and Amitabh. The latter only begins with his dialogue delivery after we are 30 minutes into the film. Poor graphics and VFX further disappoint the spectator with its execution. Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan’s eclectic performance fails to save a predictable tale that falls flat in its second half with unnecessary twists just to amp up the grandeur of the film.
