Eminent American musician Marty Balin passed away at the age of 76 on Thursday, September 27. His spokesperson Ryan Romenesko confirmed the tragic news in an official statement announced that he took his last breath on the way to the hospital, in Tampa, Florida. He had wife Susan Joy Balin by his side, during the time of his demise, the representative further stated.
Although the exact cause of his death is not known yet, it is speculated to be connected with a heart-related illness. Earlier this year, Balin sued a New York hospital saying that the tracheotomy he had during the time of his emergency heart surgery in 2016, paralyzed a vocal cord and cause other health damages.
The guitarist/singer was one of the co-founders of the psychedelic group in San Francisco in 1965 called the 'Jefferson Airplane'. He was the lead vocalist of the legendary rock band and was known for his soulful voice that paired up amazingly with the band’s distinctive music.
Talking about his sudden demise with AP, fellow Jefferson Airplane founding member Jorma Kaukonen said, “We knew he had some health problems, but he really didn’t talk about it at all and we never pressed him, his passing to me at least was sudden and unexpected."
“He was certainly one of the greatest voices of my time, His intense commitment to song and music, it just never abated,” Kaukonen added.
Marty Balin, who was originally named Martyn Jerel Buchwald, made his debut in the music industry with this pseudo name as he started recording with Challenge Records and released much-celebrated singles 'Nobody But You' and 'I Specialize in Love'. Later, he launched the band Jefferson Airplane, along with his band members co-lead vocalist Grace Slick and rhythm guitarist Paul Kantner following which several other members joined in. However, after the departure of bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen, he floated a new band called Jefferson Starship where he retained his position of singer/songwriter. His most celebrated works include, 'Comin' Back to Me', 'Miracles', 'With Your Love' among others.
He and other members of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship bands were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Moreover, he was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 owing to his performance in Jefferson Airplane.
