For cine-goers, 'based on true events' mostly adds the ex-factor in the film especially if it falls under the horror genre. With the ongoing celebrations of Halloween, social media has upped their game with special emojis and posts to ring in the day of the dead. However, did you know the real reason why this day is celebrated each day all around the globe? Halloween is a celebration observed in a number of countries on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.

It is also believed that Halloween is a festival for demonic spirits but many consider it as a myth associated with the day that is known for scaring the wits out of masses ever since its inception. While the world gets their trick or treat mode on, here are five horror films based on true story that are bound to run chills down your spine. Tip: Turn off your lights and plug in your earphones.

Poltergeist

'Poltergeist' is a 1982 American supernatural horror film directed by Tobe Hooper. Set in a California suburb, the plot focuses on a family whose home is invaded by malevolent ghosts that abduct the family's younger daughter. They say the reality behind the fiction is equally as terrifying with deaths and unexplained stories. The film is loosely based on events at a house on Long Island, New York, where a family called the Hermann's were plagued by a so-called poltergeist. Reportedly, 'Poltergeist' has been the most cursed production of all time. It was the death of young Heather O'Rourke, who played Carol Anne Freeling, that sealed the film's spooky reputation.

Veronica

Veronica is a 2017 Spanish horror-drama film directed by Paco Plaza. The film is loosely based on true events from the 1991 Vallecas case where Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro died mysteriously after she used an Ouija board.  Based on the first police report in Spain where an officer certifies having witnessed paranormal activity, this film is bound to give you chills. Veronica has also been termed as the scariest film so far by the netizens.

Viewer's Discretion: "Started watching Veronica one Saturday night. Right after the first summoning scene, I realised it's a bad idea to do this alone and had my two flatmates join me. That following week, we slept with lights on in the entire house."

The Entity

The Entity is a 1982 American horror film directed by Sidney J. Furie. It stars Barbara Hershey as a woman who is raped and tormented by an invisible assailant. Like the novel, the film is based on the 1974 Doris Bither case. In an interview, the director confessed that he intentionally avoided researching the actual case upon which 'The Entity' is based as he "did not want to judge the characters and story in any way." Neither he nor actress Barbara Hershey met with Doris Bither, the real-life Carla Moran, either prior, during or after the shooting of the film was completed in 1981.

Viewer's Discretion: I still remember scenes from the film vividly as if I watched it yesterday. One of the most horrifying films I ever saw as a child after someone from my family got a cassette for our VCR back then.

The Amityville Horror

'The Amityville Horror' is a 2005 American horror film directed by Andrew Douglas. It is a based on a novel of the same name by Jay Anson. The book, purportedly based on a true story, describes the house at 112 Ocean Avenue as remaining empty for 13 months after the DeFeo murders. In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his family at their house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. He claimed that he was persuaded to kill them by voices he heard in the house. One year later, married couple George and Kathy Lutz move into the house along with Kathy's three children from a previous marriage, Billy, Michael, and Chelsea. The family soon begins experiencing paranormal events in the house.

Viewer's Discretion: "Amityville Horror ensured I never have a peaceful moving-in to any new house. I absolutely have to keep looking behind my shoulder the first few days, half expecting to find a dead kid's spirit creeping up on me."

The Rite

'The Rite' is a 2011 horror film directed by Mikael Håfström. The film is said to be loosely based on Matt Baglio's book 'The Rite' which is based on true events witnessed by American exorcist Father Gary Thomas and his experiences from being sent to Rome to be trained for work with veteran clergy of the practice. The book traces Father Gary's life prior to and subsequent to their acquaintance in 2005 which involved Baglio observing over twenty exorcisms performed by Father Gary. Father Gary consulted and advised on the film that draws inspiration from his life.

Viewer's Discretion: This film is not as scary as the horror films I have watched before but it sure gives sleepless nights since I read the novel before watching the film.
