Assamese Film 'Bulbul Can Sing' Gets An International Platform

'Bulbul Can Sing' will make its World Premiere at 43rd Toronto International Film Festival 2018

After winning hearts with the internationally acclaimed and national award winner film, 'Village Rockstars', the writer-director-producer, Rima Das returns to the prestigious, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with her next Assamese film, 'Bulbul Can Sing'. This is the third time that the filmmaker's film will be showcased on an international platform. 'Bulbul Can Sing' will make its World Premiere at 43rd TIFF 2018 in Contemporary World Cinema section.

Das’ last independent feature 'Village Rockstars' premiered at the 2017 edition of the film festival under Discovery Section.

The writer-director-producer made the film independently, in the same way as her earlier film, 'Village Rockstars'. Sharing her joy, Rima says, “Its a huge honour to return to TIFF after 'Village Rockstars' and start the journey of my next feature, 'Bulbul Can Sing', which will have its world premiere in the competition category - Contemporary World Cinema. It’s like the homecoming for me.”  

'Bulbul Can Sing' is a visceral coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl named Bulbul. The story revolves around the girl, who lives in the remote interiors of Assam. The film is based on her journey and the path through which she finds her real self. Fighting her way through love and loss Bulbul figures out who she really is.

Filmmaker Rima Das' debut Assamese project as a writer-director-producer was 'Man with Binoculars' (Antardrishti) premiered at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in the year 2016. The movie has screened at more than 70 renowned film festivals. The film garnered a lot of accolades from the critics as well as the audience. 'Man with Binoculars' has won around 44 awards including 4 national awards in Best Feature, Best Editing, Audiography and Child Artist categories, respectively.

Antardrishti is a tale of a man, who towards the final leg of his life ponders upon episode of the present to introspect and understand his decisions of the past. He sees how his surrounding is being affected with what has already occurred and then begins his journey to discover himself and relieve others.
