However, this is not the first time the filmmaker has been in the hospital over a cardiac complaint. He had his first stroke in the year of 2004 on the sets of the film, 'Yuva'. The film starred Ajay Devgn, Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Rani Mukerji, Vivek Oberoi and Esha Deol in lead roles. And, then almost a decade later, in 2015, the 'Ok Kanmani' helmer had his second attack while holidaying in Srinagar. In 2018, reports of a third cardiac arrest surfaced, however, the hospital asserted that he was admitted for a routine check-up.

And now, Lokesh Jey, representing a media house from Chennai confirmed the news of the ace filmmaker's health by tweeting and wrote, "Director #ManiRatnam admitted to Greams Road Apollo hospital due to cardiac problems."

On the work front, Mani Ratnam was planning a film based on the novel ‘Ponniyin Selvan,’ an ambitious venture he’s been trying to make since some years now. For the lead role, he confirmed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who will be seen playing the character of Nandhini, a scheming woman who manipulates her husband to destroy the Chola royal government. Telugu veteran Mohan Babu might play her husband’s role in the film. Aishwarya had made her debut with Mani Ratnam’s ‘Iruvar’ opposite Mohanlal in 1997. She later worked with the director in ‘Guru’ alongside husband Abhishek Bachchan and the bilingual ‘Raavan’-’Raavanan.’
