Actress and wife of late actor-politician Ambareesh, Sumalatha announced her political foray on Monday as an independent candidate for the Lok Sabha polls. She received support from Sandalwood, with Yash and Darshan joining her at the event and others like Sudeep wishing her the best for her new journey.
Sumalatha’s impending political foray had been making headlines recently as speculation was rife that the ruling coalition of Congress-JDS was feeling the jitters about the new entrant. The actress will be contesting from Mandya, from where her husband was a three-time MP. She will take on Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy, also an actor and will be filing for the nomination papers on Wednesday.
At the press meet, she revealed that she had got in touch with the Congress leaders for a ticket, but they couldn’t do so due to the agreements of the alliance.
"Many Congress leaders in Mandya are facing identity crisis and they came to me and requested me to contest the election. Therefore, I decided to contest. This decision would cost the Congress dear. It would be very tough for the party to make a comeback in that region (Mandya)," she said.
Sumalatha later approached former union minister and BJP leader S M Krishna, but the party didn't offer her a ticket either.
Despite the response from the parties, regarding the support from Congress and BJP, she said, "I have been reading in the media about some BJP and Congress leaders willing to extend support to me. I hope I will get their support because Ambareesh was an apolitical being and he was loved by almost all political parties.”
Sumalatha said she was keen to carry forward her husband’s legacy in the constituency, "I declined so many posts including MLC's offered by the Congress in the past. I am entering into politics for the people of Mandya. I have heeded the people's request. It is Mandya or nothing for me. I am going to fight for Mandya. I am not bothered about winning or losing,"
On the support she received from stars, Sumalatha said, "I have not invited any stars, but Yash and Darshan came on their own as they consider themselves a part of my family. However, I have faith in the people of Mandya and they would vote for me to fill the vacuum left by Amareesh.”
Sudeep was among the other stars who tweeted his support to Sumalatha with a touching message.
