Nearly a decade since 'The Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins wrapped up, the author is bringing fans back to its universe. Scholastic announced the prequel on October 4 which is set 64 years before the beginning of the popular trilogy. 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' is set to release on  May 19, 2020, and the cover art features the Mockingjay symbol, which symbolizes a creature with a spirit of its own, along with a snake. The now-famous symbol is from the pin that one of the leading characters of the story, Katniss Everdeen wears.

'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes'

Suzanne Collins described this new addition to the already existing trilogy will be the reconstruction period after the war. The story will start off on the 10th Hunger Games competition. Earlier in June, Collins had stated that she would go back to the years that followed the “Dark Days” which is referred to as the failed rebellion in Panem. The author wanted to explore the state of nature, what the characters perceive in order to survive and identify themselves better. This book will be about the time when the Panem struggled to return to its feet. The story will evidently provide a fertile ground for characters to grapple with certain questions and thereby define “views of humanity”.

The first three 'Hunger Games' books, 'The Hunger Games', 'Catching Fire' and 'Mockingjay', have sold nearly 100 million copies and were translated in more than 50 languages.

The Hunger Games movie

The Hunger Games gave birth to four films starring Jennifer Lawrence which grossed nearly $3 billion USD at the worldwide box office. Lionsgate has reportedly hinted that the series could continue through the big-screen prequels as well. The chairman of the studio, Joe Drake said that as the proud home of the Hunger Games movies, the officials are in touch with Collins and are hoping to “work closely” on the movie. However, because of the jump of time in the prequel, characters from the original series like Katniss and Peeta might not play a role in the new story.
