The Delhi High Court on Wednesday, November 14 sought the Centre's plea for the removal of vulgar and sexually explicit content from online digital platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and others that have recently gained prominence in the country.
A bench consisting of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V. Kameswar Rao listed the matter for further hearing on February 8, 2019. The petition was filed by NGO, Justice for Rights. Advocate Harpreet S. Hora appearing for the NGO who sought a law or guidelines for regulating such contents available on these platforms.
The petitioner stated that online platforms offered obscene, vulgar, pornographic, profane and sexually explicit content in order to attract more subscribers and generate profit. The NGO claimed that most of the content that was available was in the violation of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.
However, digital streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar is gaining prominence because of their wide variety of shows and easy accessibility.
In India, Netflix currently has three plans to offer: Rs 500, Rs 650 and Rs 800. All these plans come along with different benefits. For example, Rs 500 plan is all about letting users download or stream videos on a single device. Meanwhile, Rs 650 plan is restricted to two screens for simultaneous video streaming or offline-downloading. Netflix’s top-tier plan costs Rs 800 that allows four users to simultaneously download or stream videos.

Hotstar charges 999 rupees for 12 months that covers access all its content including sports. Hotstar also offers a monthly plan for Rs 199. Amazon Prime membership, on the other hand, starts at Rs 129 per month.
Similar to Hotstar, Amazon also provides an annual subscription for Rs 999. However, Amazon Prime membership includes several other benefits such as access to Prime Video, Prime Music, in addition to logistical benefits like 1-day guaranteed delivery at free of cost upon shopping on Amazon.
