Inspired by the west, the #MeToo moment has garnered heat in India, with several people pointing out at sexual perpetrators. Names of several big-wigs has come in the forefront, including people from the comedy industry, Bollywood and media among others. In a recent turn of events, comedian Kaneez Surka has accused stand up comedian Aditi Mittal of sexual harassment. The comedian and the host of 'The General Fun Game Show', took to Twitter to narrate an incident that left her "humiliated and shocked."
She wrote that the incident happened two years ago in Andheri at a comedy show she was hosting in front of around 100 audience and several comedians. Recalling the incident, Kaneez wrote," Aditi Mittal walked up on the stage and forcefully kissed me on my mouth, while I was still on stage and without my consent. It left me humiliated, shocked and completely stripped of choice. Every person is entitled to choice and boundaries and she violated mine."
Despite, the effect the incident had on her she confronted Mittal about the same. "When I mustered the courage to reach out to her a year ago, she first apologised but soon turned hostile towards me, leaving me confused and hurt. "
Explaining why she is speaking about it now, the comedian wrote, "Seeing her name all over Twitter as a champion of the cause has been triggering me immensely. Out of my belief that the opportunity to reform is the only way forward, yesterday, once again, I spoke to her through a mutual friend and requested her to come out with a public apology and save me the pain of having to reveal my identity. Despite having acknowledged it earlier, she denied kissing me on the mouth, gaslighted me and asked me to cross check. I have proof but I thought we believe the victim. Her actions yesterday have hurt me further and burdened me with the task of having to do this but I don't want to be silent anymore. A public apology for violating my consent will be my closure."
Recently, comedian Utsav was accused of sending sexually explicit messages to several women. Post that AIB founders Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba were ousted from their comedy group owing to allegations of misconduct. Bhat had also admitted of being aware of the nature of Utsav and had failed to take any action.
