The jury of The Film Federation of India made an official announcement of the Assamese film 'Village Rockstars' being India's official entry for the Oscars for 2019. The film will compete in the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars, said the Film Federation of India.
In a press conference held on Saturday, September 21, the jury members of The Film Federation Of India announced that the Rima Das directorial will be India's official entry for the Oscars.

'Village Rockstars' revolves around a young girl Dhunu, who grows up in poverty and learns to fend for herself. The fact that she is poor does not prevent the determined Dhunu from following her dream of forming her very own rock band and owning a guitar someday.
The Assamese film that made waves across many film festivals was also awarded the Best Feature Film at the 65th National Film Awards. Rima Das' 'Village Rockstars' was awarded in three other categories, namely, Best Child Artist which was awarded to Bhanita Das, Best Location Sound Recording and Best Editing.
'Village Rockstars' got the Assamese film industry beating all over again after a dry spell of thirty long years. Previously, renowned director Jahnu Barua's 'Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai' was the first Assamese film to be awarded in the category of Best Film at the National Awards.
The world premiere of 'Village Rockstars' was held at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2017. Rima Das' directorial premiered for Indian audiences at the Mumbai Film Festival 2018.
Rima Das' 'Village Rockstars' beat films like Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat', Meghna Gulzar's 'Raazi', Siddharth Malhotra's 'Hitchki', Shoojit Sircar's 'October', Tabrez Noorani's 'Love Sonia', Ashwin Nag's 'Mahanati', Nila Madhab Panda's 'Halkaa', Vinod Kapri's 'Pihu', Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad's 'Tumbaad', Nandita Das' 'Manto', Umesh Shukla's'102 Not Out', and Sukumar's 'Rangasthalam' to name a few.

Previously, Rajkummar Rao starrer 'Newton was India's official entry for the Oscars in 2017. Rajkummar Rao had taken to Twitter to express his happiness about 'Newton' representing India at the Oscars. The Oscars were held on March 4, 2018, in Los Angeles.
